Translation Help #2

January 16th, 2009 (03:13 pm)

So here is another french to english translation... help is appreciated.
I need to do an idiomatic translation, which should make sense and tell the story, but does not have to be word for word.

Original poem (1715 - so may have some old french)

Les oiseaux d’alentour
Chantent dans ce bocage,
Et je connais, à leur ramage,
Que rien ne manque
Plus au bonheur de leurs feux.
Ils goutent avant moi,
Les fruits de la constance;
Peut étre mieux traités
Sont-ils plus amoureux.

Pourquoi leur en vier
Leur juste récompense?
L’amour ne me fair point d’offense
Quand il rend les amants heureux!

Il songe à redoubler,
Par mon impatience,
Le doux plaisir
Qui doit suivre mes vœux.

My translation:
The surrounding birds
Sing in this hedged farmland
And I know, to their song
That nothing lacks
More to the happiness of their fires.
They tasted before me,
The consistency fruit;
Can they be better treated,
They are in love.

Why in thier lives
Are they just rewarded?
Love is not at all fair, striking me
When it returns the happy lovers!

It thinks to repeat
By my impatience,
The soft pleasure
That must follow my vows.

Thanks

French Translation Help

January 16th, 2009 (02:05 pm)

So I am doing a few songs in french for my recital, and I am working on the idiomatic translation... And well I could use some help. I have it translated, but I'm not sure how to make it sound less awkward...

Here is the original (please note, some of it is early french as the song dates 1733)

A l’Amour rendez les armes,
Donnez lui tous vos moments!
Chérissez jusqu’à ses larmes,
Ses alarmes ont des charmes,
Tout est doux pour les amants.

La tranquille indifférence
N’a que d’ennuyeux plaisirs.
Mais quels biens l’Amour dispense
Pour prix des premiers soupirs!
Il fait naître l’espérance
Aussi tôt que les désirs.

My translation:
To Love return the weapons,
Give him all your moments!
Cherish until its tears,
Its alarm have charms,
All is soft for the lovers.

The quiet indifference
Has only boring pleasures.
But which goods Love exempts
For price of the first sighs!
It let hope be born
Also early as the desires.

Any help, gladly accepted.

VHS to DVD recorders... Or a DVD recorder with a way to plug VCR into.

Anyone know which are good models? Which aren't?

Faculty here at my work are looking to get one. Ideally it should be able to set up chapters as well as record off the tv....

Thanks to euterpe35... this has been corrected:

The American Red Cross is sponsoring a national "Holiday Mail for Heroes" campaign to receive and distribute holiday cards to service members and veterans both in the United States and abroad.

Holiday Mail for Heroes, which began Tuesday, Veterans Day, is a follow-up to the 2007 effort that resulted in the collection and distribution of more than 600,000 cards to hospitalized service members. This year's program will expand its reach to not only wounded service members but also veterans and their families. The goal is to collect and distribute 1 million pieces of holiday mail.

"As we enter this holiday season-a time to celebrate with family and friends-it's important to remember the thousands of men and women who serve our nation in harm's way and those who are recovering in military and veterans hospitals," said Army Col. Norvell V. Coots, commander, Walter Reed Health Care System. "The Holiday Mail for Heroes program is a wonderful outreach effort and a great way to acknowledge the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform."

Holiday cards should be mailed to:
Holiday Mail for Heroes
P.O. Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD. 20791-5456

All cards must be postmarked no later than Dec. 10. Cards should not be mailed or delivered to Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

For more information, visit www.wramc.amedd.army.mil or www.redcross.org/holidaymail for Holiday Mail for Heroes program guidelines.

Walter Reed is not accepting mail addressed to "A Recovering American Soldier."

Also, note that there are guidelines and rules about what you may/may not include in the holiday cards.
No personal info such as addresses, e-mail addresses or phone numbers, and no inserts such as photos as those will be removed.
